Our view from the boundary… Perth & Melbourne
We caught up with Gladstone Small following the conclusion of the 4th Ashes Test Match, with England retaining the Ashes!
There was hardly an Australian in sight at the MCG on Thursday, in stark contrast to the packed house at the WACA as Australia drew level in the series just under two weeks ago. That seems an age away now, as England have retained the prized urn and will bring it home come 8 January whether they win, lose or draw in Sydney (although a win is all they have in mind).
Much will be made of Australia’s capitulation and that has certainly helped England’s cause, but Flower, Strauss and Co must take most of the plaudits. Despite the odd duvet day, England have outplayed Australia in every department this winter and fully deserve their success.
Despite the cricket, Perth was very much enjoyed by our tour party with Darren Gough the guest of honour at our State of Play drinks function. Other highlights included a traditional Christmas lunch at The Langham and Michael Vaughan leading a State of Play Q&A session in Melbourne.
Our tour groups will be moving on to Sydney on New Year’s Eve (on our private plane!) for what are bound to be very jolly celebrations watching the fireworks in the harbour. Providing the team stay focussed, another win at the SCG surely beckons and a 3-1 victory.
Gladstone knows exactly how it feels to win the Ashes down under, being part of the victorious 86/87 squad – the last England squad to win in Australia – so he will be celebrating in style with our clients over the next few days.
The ODI and T20 series start immediately following the culmination of the Test series – we are offering tailormade packages for holidays to take in anything from 1 to all 9 of the matches.
